The most important thing is that our nation continues to care most for those people who need caring for the least.

I used to hear from my engineer that “it would not go bankrupt; it’s too big to fail”. Wonder if they knew one another?

The Great Egg Heist https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/interactive/2025/eggs-prices-gouging-cal-maine-investigation/ 280,000 eggs disappeared from America’s top producer. Then came a ransom note. At one point, federal agents at the border were seizing eggs more often than fentanyl. Then in February, bandits grabbed about 100,000 organic eggs from the back of a trailer at a facility in Pennsylvania.

@Mik said in The Karen Read Murder Trial: But they did find her guilty of DUR (driving under restriction?) and she got a year's probation and community service. if she completes it it goes away. George has been following this closely. It's a great example of the limitations of our justice system. I couldn't believe the trial was continuing to be honest. I'd spent a fair amount of time watching it (partly because I used to live in Canton), and the whole prosecution case looked like a stitch-up. I wonder what, if anything, will happen to the people who it must now be assumed tried to frame her.

From Cato’s Scott Linsicome: This perpetual golden share prevents any of the following from occurring without the consent of the president of the United States or his designee: Relocate U.S. Steel’s headquarters from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Redomicile outside the United States Change the name of the company from U.S. Steel Reduce, waive, or delay the $14 billion of near-term investments into U.S. Steel Transfer production or jobs outside the United States Close or idle plants before certain timeframes other than normal course temporary idling for safety, upgrades, etc. Other protections regarding employee salaries, anti-dumping pricing, raw materials and sourcing outside the U.S., acquisitions, and more. The AP adds that the golden share also gives the president “the authority to name one of the corporate board’s independent three directors and veto power over the other two choices.” Presumably other terms will emerge soon, but—regardless—these details are sufficient to turn my views on the U.S. Steel deal from vigorous support to aghast opposition.

@taiwan_girl said in On this day....: This is the best I could find for 17Jun83. 55555 Ed Warren and Lorraine Warren exorcise a "werewolf demon" from Bill Ramsey, although lack of photo or video evidence has called this claim into question https://paranorms.com/bill-ramsey/ Has it Ended? Bill Ramsey last appeared in public in 1992 when he updated his progress. Just before his exorcism, the transformations were increasing in both frequency and seriousness. Since that time, there have been no incidents recorded. No one has been rampaging uncontrollably through the streets of Southend-on-Sea in almost fifteen years now. But Bill Ramsey has been quiet for just as long as that before. It was also the release date of Superman III…

I think that golf is one of the few sports where a normal person can measure themself against the pros. One thing that amazes me is when putting, even when they miss, they miss by only a little bit.

@89th said in Tourist vs Local photo locations: *Had a dessert that that I convinced myself at the time I would "bring to the states". It's called Granita, and essentially it's shaved italian ice (simple syrup, ice, flavoring) often served with a little warm cream on top. Almost like an icy-ish sorbet with a touch of cream. Compared to most desserts it's lightweight and not too bad for you, and was incredibly delicious and refreshing on a warm day. I still think one day it'll become known/trendy here! Sound somewhat similar to a dessert we have in Taiwan called (shwap-ping 礤冰) typically made with ribbons of finely shaved ice sweetened with condensed milk. You can enjoy it with a variety of toppings like seasonal fruits, ice cream, azuki beans, sweet potato chunks, aiyu jelly, and grass jelly.

(re: playgrounds being too safe. I know someone who is on a school board, and there are a lot of regulations that have to be followed for a playground. Ground has to have a certain amount of mulch or rubber. Certain distance between equipment, etc etc etc. I would guess that the way the US is, if a kid gets hurt on playground, the school would get sued for a lot of money. Not worth the risk for the school is my guess.)

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cgeg39vr3j3o Two men have been jailed for stealing a £4.8m gold toilet from from an art exhibition at Blenheim Palace. Thieves smashed their way in and ripped out the functional 18-carat, solid gold toilet hours after a glamorous launch party at the Oxfordshire stately home in September 2019. James 'Jimmy' Sheen, 40, pleaded guilty to burglary, transferring criminal property and conspiracy to do the same in 2024, while Michael Jones, 39, was found guilty of burglary in March. The men, from Oxford, were sentenced to four years and two years and three months in prison respectively.
